About Kevin O’Hara
I’m Kevin O’Hara, and I’ve been a chicken enthusiast ever since I got my first flock back in 1972. As a kid, I even used to take my hens into school to give talks about them to my classmates. Since then, I’ve built and bought different coops, raised a variety of breeds, and dealt with everything from mites and moulting to runaway hens and pesky predators.
I created KeepingChickens.uk in 2012, to share what I’ve learned and to help other UK keepers care for their chickens with confidence. Every article on this site is written by me and based on my experience, research or both.
My book: “A Complete Guide to Buying a Chicken Coop and Run”
Choosing the right housing is one of the biggest decisions for any chicken keeper. That’s why I wrote A Complete Guide to Buying a Chicken Coop and Run — a short, practical book to help you avoid common mistakes and pick a coop that suits both your chickens and your space.
You’ll also find detailed coop reviews on the site, like:
What you’ll find on KeepingChickens.uk
This site focuses on the day-to-day reality of chicken keeping in UK back gardens. The topics covered include:
- Health and parasite problems, like mites, lice, and scaly leg
- Feeding and nutrition, including grit, treats, and safe kitchen scraps
- Coop buying advice and setup tips
- Behaviour and laying, including broody hens and soft-shelled eggs
All of it is written with beginners and small-flock keepers in mind.
Why I do it
I write this site because I enjoy sharing what I know and because I remember what it was like when my dad and I started out over fifty years ago. We were very naive at the time and had to learn as we went along, as there were very few backyard chicken keepers around whom we could ask for advice. And back in those days, of course, we didn’t have websites like this where we could get help from. Hopefully, some keepers will find the information here useful. If so, the website will be worth the time and effort.
